History of coasteering

The term seems to have been first used in 1973. In the book Sea Cliff Climbing, John Cleare and Robin Collomb said "A few enthusiasts believe that coasteering will become popular and has a big future".

In the late 1980s, a guide from Wales developed it as a commercial guided recreational activity, initially on the cliffs of St Davids in Pembrokeshire. They are now considered as the home of coasteering. By the mid-1990s, newspapers are publicizing several commercial companies offering the activity. It then spread to various regions of Great Britain and Europe to become popular in Spain and in Mallorca in the 2010s.
